About this dataset

BraTS (Brain Tumor Segmentation) is an annual MICCAI challenge organized by Penn / CBICA. The 2023 edition expanded to 5 sub-challenges covering adult glioma, pediatric brain tumors, meningioma, sub-Saharan Africa glioma, and brain metastases. All scans are multi-modal MRI (T1, T1-CE, T2, FLAIR) with expert-annotated tumor subregions.

High-quality dataset across most dimensions

Composite score computed from the 7 dimensions below: completeness, uniqueness, validation health, size adequacy, format compliance, label density, and class balance.

Completeness 95
No public completeness metric; using prior for 'expert_curated' datasets.
Uniqueness 95
Manually vetted for uniqueness by maintainer.
Validation 95
Multiple expert annotators with reconciliation pass.
Size adequacy 68
5,000 items — below 20,000 target for Medical Imaging, but usable.
Format compliance 95
Industry-standard format — drop-in compatible with mainstream tooling.
Label density 64
Average 3.0 labels per item (moderate).
Class balance 90
Near-uniform class distribution.

Sample statistics

What's actually in the dataset — from the maintainer's published stats.

5,000+ multi-parametric MRI studies across 5 sub-challenges. Each study: T1, T1-CE, T2, FLAIR + expert tumor masks (enhancing, core, whole tumor).

License

BraTS 2023 — Brain Tumor Segmentation is distributed under CC BY-NC 4.0. This is a third-party public dataset; LabelSets indexes and scores it but does not host or redistribute the data. Always verify current license terms with the maintainer before commercial use.

Heads up: this dataset's license restricts commercial use. If you need medical imaging data for production, check LabelSets' paid datasets below — every listing has an explicit commercial license.
